The First Game explores the beginning of the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Football Team, and the challenges the players faced to play the beautiful game.
It traces the team's journey from humble beginnings in 1973, to achieving a place in the 2023 World Cup, on the fifty year anniversary of the foundation of the team.
The First Game is told from the perspective of Linda Gorman, a former international football player and manager of the women's National team.
This documentary tells a tale of determination and perseverance in the face of inequality. It questions institutional histories and memory, and details the discrimination faced by the women who fought to be taken seriously as athletes as they played for their country.
I researched and directed this film as my graduate project for my degree in Film & Broadcasting from Technological University Dublin.
It has been screened across Ireland in many film festivals such as:
